Yelp Reviews: How They Work, and Why Google Matters More

Updated 2 min readLutendo Editorial Team

Yelp was long the first stop for local reviews. In many markets, it has lost that role. This guide, written from a European market perspective, explains how Yelp reviews work today, why many of them never become visible, and where your energy is better spent if you want to be found locally.

What are Yelp reviews, and who still reads them?

Yelp is a review platform for local businesses: restaurants, tradespeople, doctors, service providers. Users give one to five stars and write up their experience. In the US, Yelp remains relevant; across much of Europe, the active user base has been shrinking for years. Most local searches today start directly on Google, and end there too, in the Local Pack next to the map, without a portal like Yelp ever being opened.

Why do Yelp reviews disappear? The filter hardly anyone knows about

The most common question about Yelp is not a marketing question but a frustration question: why is my customer's review gone? The answer is Yelp's automated recommendation software. It classifies every review as "recommended" or "not currently recommended", and only recommended reviews count towards the visible average. Reviews from profiles with no history, no photo or no activity are filtered out especially often. Precisely the satisfied occasional customers who create an account just for you fall through the filter systematically.

Can you build Yelp reviews legitimately?

Yes, but the levers are limited and the rules are strict. Yelp explicitly prohibits businesses from actively asking for reviews, even without anything offered in return. What remains is indirect: a fully maintained profile, visible responses to existing reviews, and a Yelp badge at your location or on your website. Bought or incentivised Yelp reviews are risky and are removed by the filter more often than average. For exactly this reason, Lutendo does not offer Yelp campaigns.

Where the same energy achieves more: your Google Business Profile

For local visibility in most European markets, the Google Business Profile is the lever with the biggest effect: reviews feed into "prominence" (one of the three official factors of local ranking) and help determine whether your listing appears in the Local Pack when someone searches nearby. Unlike with Yelp, there is a plannable, honest way to build this profile: real guests visit your business, share their honest experience, and you check every proof of visit yourself before it counts.

In short

Is Yelp still worth it for European businesses? As a well-maintained secondary profile, yes; as an active growth channel, hardly: the users are on Google.

Can I restore filtered Yelp reviews? No. The classification is made by Yelp's software; businesses have no influence over it.

What is the alternative? A steady cadence of genuine, verified Google reviews, and, for online shops, a credible Trustpilot profile.

Honest reviews. Testers decide content and stars. Nothing on this page promises a review or a ranking.
