Four of five travellers read reviews before booking, and TripAdvisor explicitly weights recency in its ranking. A profile without fresh reviews reads as closed.
How travellers decide
In the joint study by TripAdvisor and Phocuswright ("Custom Survey Research Engagement"), roughly four of five travellers said they usually read reviews before booking; more than half are reluctant to book a place with no reviews at all. Unlike products, travel is about experiences you only get once: a disappointing evening cannot be sent back, and a ruined holiday day does not come round again. Travellers read what other guests wrote accordingly closely.
The documented ranking: recency, count, quality
TripAdvisor discloses itself what the popularity rank depends on: the quality of reviews, their count and explicitly their recency. Newer reviews count more than old ones. The practical consequence is uncomfortable: a large but dormant review cushion loses to a smaller profile with steady inflow. A profile whose last review is eight months old reads to travellers like a closed venue.
What a better score means economically
The Cornell study by Chris Anderson ("The Impact of Social Media on Lodging Performance", Cornell Center for Hospitality Research, 2012) measured for hotels: as the review score rises, so does room on price and occupancy, because guests accept higher rates for a better-rated venue without demand collapsing. For your own calculations that puts the score on the same line as season and day of the week.
The second lever: management responses
Beyond fresh reviews, the venue's visible reaction counts: management responses show future guests that feedback lands, especially for critical voices. Responding costs nothing but time and can be caught up retroactively, including on last year's reviews. For the cadence there is Lutendo: paying guests, real experiences, honest reviews with checked proof.
