Google Shopping Optimization: Feed, Prices, Reviews

Updated 2 min readLutendo Editorial Team

Google Shopping is a comparison shelf: identical product tiles, side by side, decided in seconds. Google Shopping optimization means being better than the tile next to yours at three levers: feed, price and stars. In that order.

Lever 1: The product feed, the foundation of all visibility

Shopping ads have no keywords; Google matches search queries against your feed in Merchant Center. That is why data quality decides: a precise product title with brand, product type and key attribute up front; complete attributes (GTIN, colour, size, condition); the correct category; high-quality images on a neutral background; and exact price and availability data (mismatches between feed and shop lead to disapprovals). If you can only work one lever, work this one.

Lever 2: Price and shipping, the most visible point of comparison

In the Shopping grid, your price sits right next to your competitors'. That does not mean "cheapest wins", but clear outliers on the high side need a visible reason. Shipping costs belong in the calculation: a cheap item with expensive shipping loses the comparison at the last moment.

Lever 3: Stars (product and seller ratings)

Two kinds of ratings work in Shopping: product ratings (stars on the product tile, aggregated from shop and marketplace reviews, among other sources) and seller ratings (stars next to the shop name, fed by review platforms such as Trustpilot via Google's review partners). Google itself documents that seller ratings increase the click-through rate of ads: the stars are the only proof of trust visible directly on the comparison shelf. A credible, up-to-date Trustpilot profile therefore pays off twice: in the search results and at checkout (what a TrustScore does).

The order in practice

First get the feed clean (nothing runs without it), then check price competitiveness per product group, then build review substance: seller ratings through a continuously maintained profile with real orders, product ratings through honest reviews from real buyers. The same rule applies here as everywhere: only genuine, verifiable reviews hold up. Bought stars cost you the account and the trust at the same time.

Honest reviews. Testers decide content and stars. Nothing on this page promises a review or a ranking.
