Google Reviews Statistics: What the Research Really Shows
Plenty of numbers circulate about reviews: some proven, some marketing folklore. This round-up of Google reviews statistics summarizes what serious research on local reviews actually supports, where the numbers come from, and where their limits lie.
What does Google itself say?
The most reliable source is the platform: in its own documentation, Google names the number and quality of reviews as part of "prominence", one of the three factors of local ranking. That is not SEO speculation but an official statement: reviews are ranking substance for the Local Pack.
What is one review star worth in revenue?
The most-cited measurement comes from Michael Luca (Harvard Business School, "Reviews, Reputation, and Revenue"): one additional review star corresponds to 5 to 9% more revenue for independent restaurants. Honesty requires the caveat: the study uses Yelp data and measures restaurants. Transferring it to every industry and to Google is an approximation. But it is the cleanest available measurement showing that stars in local profiles arrive directly at the till.
How many people actually read reviews?
The annual Local Consumer Review Survey by BrightLocal has measured it consistently for years: the large majority of consumers, roughly 75 to 90% depending on the year, read local reviews before visiting a business. Two side findings matter at least as much in practice: recency is weighted heavily, and owner replies are read and rewarded.
The conclusion in three sentences
Reviews help decide whether you get found (prominence), whom searchers trust (rating, count, recency) and what that means economically (a measurable revenue effect per star). None of the studies shows that bought fake reviews work. On the contrary: their value depends on authenticity. The robust path is real guests, honest texts and proof that stands up to scrutiny, organized in a plannable way through a campaign with verified visits.
Honest reviews. Testers decide content and stars. Nothing on this page promises a review or a ranking.
